Get Active (2009)
You Can Make a Difference in 2009
Do you believe the air Texans breathe should be cleaner? Should a greater percentage of our power come from renewable resources? Should do everything we can to promote energy efficiency? Should we take steps today to reverse climate change?
Thousands of Texans already stand with ACT. Do you? Here’s how you can help ACT during the 2009 legislative session.
1. Join our mailing list. (Or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.) Keep up with ACT throughout the session
To know what’s happening in the legislature, sign up to receive news updates from ACT. Each week, we’ll tell you what’s on the agenda for the Texas environment. We’ll also contact you when it’s time to communicate with our legislators about particular bills. If you choose to follow ACT on Twitter, you’ll receive information more frequently about how the environmental agenda is doing this spring. Whenever there’s a call for action, you’ll hear about it immediately via our ACTtexas email list, Twitter, or Facebook. (We’ll also post the information here on the ACT website under the heading “Take Action–Code Green!”)
2. Take action when good bills need citizen support
Phone calls, emails, even faxes can make all the difference at crucial moments in the session. When you sign up for our mailing list, you’re automatically added to our “Code Green” action alert system. When your voice is needed to make something good happen, we’ll email you and tell you what action to take.
3. Take action when legislation threatens the Texas environment
One of the most important things ACT does during the legislative session is fight bills that will harm the environment. Throughout the session, there are moments when citizen activists tip the scales–when email, calls, faxes, even visits convince lawmakers to do the right thing. When you get an email from us (or see on Twitter or the ACT website) telling you to take action right now, we mean we need you to take action right now!
4. Tell your friends about the ACT 2009 Legislative Agenda
5. Get involved with an ACT organization
By actively supporting the one of the ACT organizations–attending a meeting, becoming a member, signing a petition–you contribute to everyone’s success. The Alliance for a Clean Texas exists because Texas has so many environmental challenges. Different organizations address different needs. When all these organizations come together, their combined voice resonates both within the Capitol and throughout the state. Bringing these voices together is what ACT does. When you join one of these organizations, you lend your voice to everyone who supports ACT.
6. Reach out to your local media to let them know about your work on behalf of a greener, healthier Texas
Contact your favorite local reporter and let them know what you are doing for a cleaner, greener economy in Texas. Tell them what you are learning at the Capitol as you lobby during the Session. You could also write letters to the editor, guest editorials, comments on blogs, or a post on your own blog. Or go ahead and Twitter about it! There are many ways to share information and make the news. For ideas or help, feel free to contact Donna.Hoffman@SierraClub.org
